In the 14th century, Conrad was a prosperous merchant in Italy who had everything he could want: a prosperous business, a lovely wife, and a pleasant existence. He nevertheless unintentionally sparked a fire one day while out hunting in the forest, which swiftly spread and completely destroyed a significant portion of the forest.

Not only that, but someone else was falsely accused and beaten for his mistake and sentenced to death!

Conrad was so shaken and saddened by this that he wanted to make up for his error.

He and his wife decided to separate and both joined the religious life.

St. Conrad of Piacenza joined the Franciscan order while his wife joined the female order of the Franciscans, the Order of Poor Clares, established by St. Clare of Assisi.

Eventually, St. Conrad of Piacenza left to become a hermit. He lived alone in a cave in the hills outside of Noto, a town in southeastern Sicily. St. Conrad of Piacenza ‘s life as a hermit was marked by great penance and austerity. He ate only bread and water, wore a hair shirt, and slept on the bare ground. Despite the physical hardships he endured, Conrad’s faith and spiritual strength continued to grow. (UCatholic)

Towards the end of his life, St. Conrad of Piacenza became gravely ill. He died on February 19, 1351, at the age of 61. He was buried in the Church of Sant’Abbondio in Piacenza, Italy.
