St. Conrad of Piacenza was a normal, married guy who’s life took a turn and he wound up a single hermit!

What is the life story of St. Conrad of Piacenza?
St. Conrad of Piacenza was born in 1290 in Piacenza, a city in the northern region of Italy. He was born into a wealthy family of high social status, but despite his privileged upbringing, St. Conrad of Piacenza felt called to a life of simplicity, humility, and devotion to God. In the 14th century, Conrad was a prosperous merchant in Italy who had everything he could want: a prosperous business, a lovely wife, and a pleasant existence. He nevertheless unintentionally sparked a fire one day while out hunting in the forest, which swiftly spread and completely destroyed a significant portion of the forest.
Not only that, but someone else was falsely accused and beaten for his mistake and sentenced to death!
Conrad was so shaken and saddened by this that he wanted to make up for his error.
He and his wife decided to separate and both joined the religious life.
St. Conrad of Piacenza joined the Franciscan order while his wife joined the female order of the Franciscans, the Order of Poor Clares, established by St. Clare of Assisi.
Eventually, St. Conrad of Piacenza left to become a hermit. He lived alone in a cave in the hills outside of Noto, a town in southeastern Sicily. St. Conrad of Piacenza ‘s life as a hermit was marked by great penance and austerity. He ate only bread and water, wore a hair shirt, and slept on the bare ground. Despite the physical hardships he endured, Conrad’s faith and spiritual strength continued to grow. (UCatholic)
Eventually, people began to seek St. Conrad of Piacenza out for spiritual guidance and healing. Conrad used his gifts to help others and became known for his ability to perform miracles. He was said to have healed the sick, cast out demons, and even calmed a raging storm at sea.
St. Conrad of Piacenza ‘s reputation as a holy man grew, and people from all over Italy began to visit him for guidance and counsel. He would often spend hours in prayer, and his love for Jesus in the Eucharist was a great source of strength and inspiration for him.
Towards the end of his life, St. Conrad of Piacenza became gravely ill. He died on February 19, 1351, at the age of 61. He was buried in the Church of Sant’Abbondio in Piacenza, Italy.
